School-Based Services

OHEL’s professional staff are available to go to schools to provide a) insightful presentations and constructive workshops to heighten awareness about at-risk behavior, b) staff training to advance the ability to identify and confront mental health concerns and respond in an effective manner, and c) provide referrals for treatment where necessary. Topics addressed in schools include: promoting self-esteem, conflict resolution (bullying, anger management, etc.), relationship building (social skills training, peer pressure, etc.), prevention of at-risk behavior (addictions, eating disorders), and safety and prevention from unwanted touch.

Sexual Abuse Prevention and Response
Sexual abuse of children is a hidden and destructive crime, and it can tragically occur at the best of schools. Far-sighted schools that are proactive and invest in a comprehensive prevention and response plan will protect their students, their staff and the reputation of their school. Even unsubstantiated and false allegations can throw a school and community into turmoil, ruining lives and careers.

With appropriate proactive education and policies, school faculty and parents can greatly reduce and prevent such emotionally and physically scarring events. As part of a NYC Department of Education (DOE) MTAC (Multiple Task Award Contract) Safe and Supportive Schools Initiative, OHEL provides NYC schools training in sexual abuse response and prevention. Project T.A.P.E.S.T.R.Y. Teacher Abuse Prevention, Education and Sexual Trauma Response is a four module, coordinated and integrated “tapestry” of evidence-based services for sexual abuse prevention and response in schools, student body, and parent body. Each module can be requested separately or together, delivered on site to a school.

Module 1 - Administrators and principals
Module 2-  School mental health professionals
Module 3- Teachers
Module 4- Parents

Anti-bullying
OHEL’s anti-bullying program takes a 3 pronged approach- Specialists work with students, parents, and faculty to create a partnership between all of them.

-Workshops for students
Therapists ensure that the students are proactive instead of reactive, in order to create a positive environment in the school where bullying is not accepted

-Workshops for parents
In order to provide a supportive home, and reinforce what their children learn in school

-Teacher training
Teachers are trained in how to differentiate between bullying and other problem behaviors, and how to address these issues in the classroom.

Project Chinuch
Facilitating the emotional health of students is an important component of a good school environment. Project Chinuch is a resiliency building program that offers schools and camps guidance and instruction in how to create safe classrooms and educational environments using current research-based methodologies.

New York Programs
Staff provide evaluations and counseling to children and consultations to parents about issues that are identified by school staff.   These include behavioral problems, school adjustment, socialization, emotional issues or problems of bullying.  For more long term therapy, staff offers referrals to families.  In addition, staff provides training to teachers and administrators as well as workshops for parents on a variety of mental health topics. These services are provided to yeshivas, day schools and parochial schools throughout New York City and Long Island.

New Jersey Programs
OHEL’s office in Teaneck, New Jersey replicates many of OHEL’s programs which have a proven track record in New York including mental health counseling, in addition to prevention programs for child abuse and at-risk youth.

Specific services include:
specialized prevention and consultation for schools and community organization
community education
treatment services

OHEL’s RESPECT Program is also available to assist individuals and families who suffer from the trauma related to sexual abuse.

In addition, families in North and South Jersey with children with disabilities can take advantage of OHEL’s recreation programs, including an end-of-summer program which helps fill the void between the end of summer camp and the beginning of school.
