Alches

By: David Mandel

Published in the Jewish Press, October 13, 2000

I first heard the term alche, short for alcoholic, fifteen years ago. My boss at the time, a brilliant manager and clinician, and I were meeting with someone. This man held a very responsible position yet it seemed to me that several times in our meeting he displayed behaviors that left me curious.

When I commented on this to my boss after our meeting, he told me he believed this man was an alche, a recovered alcoholic.

In the ensuing fifteen years I have learned much more about alcoholism including, most strikingly, of its existence in the Orthodox Jewish community. I am not speaking of the person who has a couple of shots at a shabbos kiddush or the man who occasionally has a drink of whisky or wine with his dinner. I am speaking of true alcoholics; those youngsters and adults who have a craving need for whisky, beer or wine in substantial quantity on a regular basis.

Simchas Torah
Now is a good time to discuss this issue because of Simchas Torah. Those youngsters and adults in our community, especially the youngsters who are alcoholics, will have ample opportunity to drink on Simchas Torah. We will be providing them with easy access to liquor, inadvertently of course. And since Simchas Torah is a time of acceptable drinking in unsupervised settings in shuls and yeshivas, we are enabling an adolescent with a drinking problem or a youngster who is an alcoholic to binge.

Dr. Abraham Twerski, the noted psychiatrist and author, has been speaking and writing on alcoholism in the frum community for many years. His son, Dr. Ben Zion Twerski, a psychologist specializing in addictions, continues these discussions on various addictions such as alcoholism, drugs, and gambling. The sophisticated reader will understand the interrelationship of these issues. It is called co-addictions. While you may be using alcohol or drugs as an escape it is likely that use of one substance will lead you to use other substances.

My colleagues and I recently met a sixteen-year-old recovering alcoholic. Sixteen and he’s already a recovering alcoholic. He’s a fine student. He is frum, he’s attended yeshiva all his life and continues to do so today. He’s from a middle class family in Brooklyn. They are a regular "balabatishe" family.

This young man shared with us, in the presence of his parents, how he began drinking when he was eleven. It began innocently enough. Booze was easily available in his home and in shul at kiddushim. At his friends’ Bar Mitzvahs he honed his drinking habit. By the time he was fifteen, he was a full-blown alche, drinking forty to eighty ounces of beer at a clip.

Here was a frum yeshiva boy describing to us how he lived in his clothing for days at a time, unkempt, day dreaming or sleeping through his classes in yeshiva. The warning signs were there early enough to prevent him from sliding deeper into an abyss. His parents, his rebbe, and his teachers all missed these warning signs and over a four-year period this frum boy became an alcoholic.

We asked him who were his drinking buddies? Anyone he could find, he answered. He drank with other boys his age or a little older, most of them were frum. Or he drank by himself. He was telling us clearly what many people know, that there are frum alcoholics, many more so than we care to admit.

Since we began our addiction treatment program at OHEL seven months ago, our staff have evaluated and treated fifty people, adolescents and young adults. Fifty people, who have problems with the use of Marijuana, Ecstasy, prescription drugs, Cocaine and Heroin. Significantly, half of these people have a drinking problem. Also, significantly, most of these individuals, male and female, are frum or if they’re not frum today, they all attended yeshiva in their lifetime.

Back to our sixteen-year-old. He was very fortunate. His parents now acknowledge they missed the early warning signs. They describe themselves as having been too busy with work and not paying enough attention to their son’s cries for help. They are now firmly supporting his recovery effort. He has successfully completed a lengthy detox program. He and his parents participate in weekly family counseling at OHEL. He’s been "clean" now for over seven months.

This young man will succeed G-d willing because he possesses two critically important factors; first his acknowledgement that he is an alcoholic and he now knows he is always one drink away form returning to this state. Secondly, he has the necessary support to succeed. His parents are more proud of his recovery than ashamed of his previous drinking. They shared their experience with us so other young people and their families can learn and be helped.

Managing the Liquor
Simchas Torah is upon us. What can we do? Like the articulate, intelligent man my boss and I met with fifteen years ago, alcoholics don’t wear a sign. You can't know which adolescent is binge drinking.

There are practical ways that a shul and a yeshiva can supervise it’s liquor on Simchas Torah or for that matter at any shabbos kiddush or Bar Mitzvah. The answer lies in managing the liquor using the "designated driver" concept. It means designating a person in shul to supervise the liquor table, ensuring that minors don’t take drinks. This man should walk around the shul and walk around outside the building. This obviously isn’t a foolproof system and an alche will find booze, but at least you may be preventing that next child from taking his first drink or from continuing on his journey of drinking. Similarly at Bar Mitzvahs, the baal simcha could ask a friend to be responsible to watch for kids not drinking in the hall, in the bathrooms or outside the catering hall.

Alcoholism in the frum community remains one of those issues most of us don’t pay too much attention to. How many alches are there? Who knows? Like other issues in our community, we don’t want to know. We’re afraid to keep count. Yet we have issues that we need to face and work on together so we can help those who need it.

Most of us may not be able to name anyone we know who is a true alcoholic, so maybe we don’t yet have this problem in our community. Or maybe we do, but it’s just embarrassing to acknowledge it. This Simchas Torah is a good time to ensure that we keep yet another young man from beginning this journey.
