Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders 

Catherine Birndorf, MD is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Founding Director of the Payne Whitney Women's Program, at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. She is also founder of the Women’s Mental Health Consortium, a New York area network of women’s mental health clinicians and researchers. Her most recent project is founding the Motherhood Center of New York, where she serves as Medical Director. The Center provides supportive services for new and expecting mothers, including a range of treatment options for women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Birndorf’s area of psychiatric expertise is reproductive mental health. She specializes in treating women before, during and after pregnancy, as well as at other times of transition in their lives. The recipient of numerous awards, she serves on boards of several organizations, including the Postpartum Support International.

Dr. Birndorf has published a number of journal articles and book chapters regarding women’s mental health and psychiatry. She is co-author of the self-help book, The Nine Rooms of Happiness, and the soon-to be published MotherMind, a groundbreaking book about the emotional side of pregnancy and postpartum. 

A popular speaker to professional and lay audiences, Dr. Birndorf presents internationally, educating and advocating for women. She has appeared on multiple television programs, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, MSNBC and CNN, and for ten years was a regular mental health columnist for SELF Magazine.

Sandra R. Wolkoff, PhD, LCSW-R is renowned for her expertise in Perinatal Mood Disorders and their impact on the mother-child relationship and child development. The Founding Director of the Marks Family Right from the Start 0-3+ Center of the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, she also developed the Training and Consultation Services and the Diane Goldberg Maternal Depression Treatment Program at the Center. 

Dr. Wolkoff has presented at conferences throughout the U.S., with a focus on the impact of maternal mood disorders on child development. She has been published in several Journals, and is co-editor of Raising Young Children Well: Insights and Ideas for Parents and Teachers.

The recipient of numerous awards for her work, Dr. Wolkoff recently has been honored with the Pioneer Award from the Postpartum Resource Center of New York State. She has also been selected as Fellow in the Leaders for the 21st Century, an initiative of Zero To Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families, in Washington, DC. 

Dr. Wolkoff has worked with the Nassau County Perinatal Coalition and the National Parent-Child Home Program to provide training on the recognition and treatment of Perinatal Mood Disorders. In addition, she has chaired the Nassau County Perinatal Mood Disorder Task Force, and is a member of the Board of NYC Zero to Three Network and the COPE Foundation. Dr. Wolkoff maintains a private practice in Albertson, NY.
