The Project Hope Crisis Counseling Program at OHEL

Hurricane Sandy had devastating effects on many New Yorkers, wreaking havoc on their homes, inflicting huge financial loss, testing the limits of friendship, family and community support. Hurricane Sandy tested the limits of people's ability to cope with adversity and manage stress. Not surprisingly, it has impacted people of all ages including their family relationships, work and school performance. Although the hurricane occurred months ago, for many, the hurricane is not over. The overwhelming impact of Hurricane Sandy has left survivors with confusion and disbelief about what happened while facing an uncertain future. Parents face the multiple challenges of rebuilding physically, emotionally and financially, while supporting their children through the same process.

Project Hope at OHEL is a free crisis counseling program that promotes resilience for individuals, parents and the community through an array of educational and counseling services. The philosophy that guides Project Hope is that everybody has strengths that can be supported and enhanced, and with some education and support, people can overcome even the most difficult challenges.

Project Hope at OHEL’s crisis counselors provide support and information through:
-Individual Counseling
-Group Counseling
-Educational Programs
-Presentations
-Referrals to individuals, families and groups that have been affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Services are provided to individuals and their families where it is easiest and most comfortable for them - at home or the location of their choice, such as homes, community agencies, houses of worship, schools and day care centers. Services are short term.

Funded by FEMA
