Joint OHEL and YARC Community Training for Parents of Children with ADHD a Success
A group of over 80 parents joined together on Sunday, June 6th at the Yeshiva of Spring Valley for the First Annual Community Training for Parents of Children with ADHD. The event, which was sponsored by OHEL and the Yeshiva Association of Rockland County featured Rabbi Doniel Frank, M.Ed., LMFT, coordinator of OHEL’s operations in Rockland and Northern New Jersey and Dr. Michael Steinhardt.
Rabbi Frank spoke on understanding the challenges of ADHD children, removing the stigma of ADHD and seeing its upside, and practical strategies for managing the ADHD and working with schools. Dr. Steinhardt, a neuropsychologist at Hackensack University Medical Center, focused his presentation on evaluating for ADHD in children.
OHEL’s Monsey school based services has been serving the community since 2001, offering free school based counseling to students and professional trainings to educators and parents. During its first few years of service, the staff at OHEL of Rockland County noticed that much of the counseling issues that were being referred to them were related to ADHD. In response, OHEL has been on a mission to educate and empower the community of educators and parents regarding the struggles of children with ADHD, as well as to continue working individually with students. Since 2007, OHEL has focused its training on administrators and teachers and have already trained close to 300 educators in the Monsey community. At Sunday’s event, the second dimension of the vision – the training of parents – has begun. There has already been discussion, as a result of this latest training, for OHEL to begin support groups for parents of children with ADHD.
