Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield and his wife Leah Lehrfield are a dynamic presence in the Staten Island Jewish community. Under their leadership, the Young Israel of Staten Island has thrived, becoming one of the most dedicated synagogue to chesed and improving lives of their fellow New Yorkers.
For more than three decades the Young Israel of Staten Island has been deeply involved with OHEL. Several members of Young Israel of Staten Island have become OHEL foster parents, and many are major supporters of OHEL year round. There are also many OHEL employees in the synagogue as well as OHEL Co-President, Mel Zachter and OHEL Gala chairpersons Moti Shwartz and Mutty Vegh.
Since coming to the Young Israel of Staten Island pulpit, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Lehrfield have continued this tradition. They have worked with OHEL in assisting community members, and having appeals to benefit OHEL.
Incredibly, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Lehrfield have continued a tradition starting in 1986 that has successfully raised financial resources for OHEL to provide services to thousands of children and families in our community. Children whose parents are unable to care for them find safe homes with loving foster families. Adults with developmental and psychiatric disabilities get the support and services they need to live with dignity.. Children of all abilities to come together in a community of great fun and friendship at Camp Kaylie, an integrated Jewish sleepaway camp in Wurtsboro NY. OHEL has provided school based services to all the local yeshivot in Staten Island for many years
“The work that OHEL does is very special. As a Rav of a large community, I call upon OHEL often to support me and our community.” said Rabbi Lehrfield. “I am so happy that we can be involved in helping OHEL make such a profound difference in the lives of so many people.”
The Gala will take place on Sunday 22nd November 2015 at the New York Marriott Marquis at 5:00 PM. Please join OHEL for what promises to be an inspiring and memorable evening.
