Ohel’s Community Habilitation (CommHab) is a life skills education program for people with autism, ages nine and up. It is designed to help participants learn skills that will allow them to live freer and more independent lives within their communities.
Personalized Support for Independence and Skill Development
Clients in our Community Habilitation program choose their direction, and we help them achieve their personal goals. Some come to us with extremely specific goals, like keeping their space clean and organized. Some come to us needing something broader, perhaps help learning to regulate their emotions during social interactions. We’re here to offer support and help them work through challenges to achieve their goals.
CommHab program goals may include:
- Travel training (navigating the subway, calling a cab, using a rideshare app)
- Hygiene and grooming
- Social skills and communication
- Fine motor skills
- Gross motor skills
- Ordering food
- Money management and budgeting
- Organization
- Health, fitness, and nutrition
- Self-directed engagement at home
Don’t see your goal here? Talk to us about it! Let us know how we can support your specific needs.
The CommHab program promises clients one-on-one attention from a trained counselor, either in their own home or out in their community. We’re proud to have helped our clients live with greater comfort and harmony with their families at home, and interact more confidently with their neighborhoods.
This program is part of the NY State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). We are happy to help you apply for OPWDD services.
