Employment Training for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Ohel’s employment training program empowers adults with developmental disabilities to succeed in the workplace through preparation, education, and support.  The work skills they learn become life skills, helping them to thrive in their personal lives and beyond.

Our employment training program is person-centered. We talk to our participants about their ideal fields and what they want to be doing day-to-day, and together we determine a strategy. We’ve found employment for our participants in opticians’ offices, in car showrooms, and in Broadway theaters. Our program takes them from the job search, through supported employment, and beyond.

Some of the positions we’ve helped our participants obtain:

  • Office clerk/receptionist
  • Food prep
  • Photographer
  • Mail clerk
  • Counselor
  • Courier

Pre-Vocational Training

In Pre-Vocational training, we work on building the skills that will help our participants  find a job and become comfortable in the workplace. We recognize the unique abilities of individuals on the autism spectrum and prepare them for jobs that leverage these abilities. We start with:

  • Career assessments
  • Resume writing
  • Interview skills
  • Guidaince throughout the interview process

We can work towards more specific goals, as well. For example, a participant who wants to be a chef would focus on culinary skills, equipment mastery, and kitchen etiquette.

Vocational training extends through the job search and continues once employment is attained.  Ohel has a long history of getting our participants into consistent, fulfilling careers.

Supported Employment

Once employed, Supported Employment ensures our clients succeed in their job. This can mean on or off-site coaching, including one-to-one coaching, and help with specific challenges.  We can help individuals with specific task-oriented obstacles, as well as interpersonal challenges.

Our ultimate goal is to transition our clients from supported employment into independent employment. We recommend that an individual leave support services only after careful assessment of their competence and comfort in the workplace are done only when they’re self-sufficient at their job and an integral part of their workplace.

Ohel also offers various Residential options for intellectual/developmentally disabled individuals needing support in their daily lives.
