Family Reimbursement for Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities

A program that helps families of children with developmental disabilities to find flexibility in their budgets.

While the rising cost of living is having an effect on everyone, caregivers for children with developmental disabilities have a whole host of additional costs that can put pressure on their household budget. The family reimbursement program is designed to help.

Supported by the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, Ohel’s Family Reimbursement program allows for parents and caregivers of children with developmental disabilities to apply to get the cost of a whole range of everyday items and activities paid back to them. More harmony in the home, more flexibility in the budget.

Here are some of the things covered by the family reimbursement program:

  • Items that the child has damaged – clothing, glasses, or even mattresses and box springs
  • Recreation and after-school activities like swim lessons, museum memberships, or art and music lessons
  • Equine therapy
  • Sensory items – bean bag chairs, swings, cushions, noise-cancelling ear covers, fidget toys, mini trampolines
  • Extra respite care – allows parents to take care of errands or cook dinner while respite workers keep their kid engaged
  • Gym memberships and fitness classes

This program is available for families living in Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan.
